Center for Ignatian Spirituality (CIS) – Viet Nam was born and structured on September 2019 by the Society of Jesus – Vietnam Province. This center was established as our concrete response to one of the universal apostolic preferences of the Society of Jesus in the next ten years, namely showing the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and discernment.

It can be said that CIS is the first official spirituality center of the Vietnamese Church under the leadership of Vietnamese Jesuits.  So far, in Vietnam, there are many retreat houses and pastoral centers run by some religious congregations. These places aim at creating a quiet and peaceful space for people to encounter God. However, we do not have any center or institute that helps students study and deepen their understanding on Spirituality and Psychology. Therefore, the CIS is also our response to that great needs of the Vietnamese Church.

The purpose of our center is to help people understand their own vocation and to recognize God’s unique call for them to serve Him in the world. To meet that purpose, the CIS organizes seminars on Introduction to Psychology and Pastoral Counseling, short courses on Meditation and Prayer, Spiritual Discernment and Accompaniment, the Structure and the Dynamic of the Spiritual Exercises; and talks on certain matters that are problematically happening in Vietnam nowadays such as: Alcoholics, Drug addiction, Sex…etc.

On Wednesday, September 2019 the CIS started her first “semester” with the opening Mass presided by our Father Provincial – Vincent Pham Van Mam S.J.

This center is located at 171 Ly Chinh Thang, Ward 7, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. Father Dominic Nguyen Duc Hanh is currently assigned as director of this center. At present, CIS has successfully organized three courses, namely, Awareness Examen: Prayer and Discernment, A Psychological Study on Vocation and Religious Formation and Stages of human psychological development and strategies for faith formation. With the increasing demands of the big number of registered students, the Center has scheduled to open more courses in the near future. Hopefully, our center will contribute to satisfy the needs of the intellectual and spiritual formation of those students.

The structure of the center includes four members:

  • Director: Fr. Dominic Nguyen Duc Hanh S.J
  • Assistant: Scho. Peter Hoang Cong Phuong S.J

Officer staffs:

  • Teresa Bui Thoai Truc
  • Mary Vu Phuong Hong Yen

As the desire of Jesus mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Lk 12, 49b) the CIS also wishes that same fire which originated from the Trinity would flare up and spread in different parts of Viet Nam.
